Bharti offers MLA fund to make Malviya Nagar a free-WiFi zone
New Delhi : After Khan Market and Connaught Place were turned into WiFi hotspots, Malviya Nagar might be next on the list.
In a letter to Lt-Governor Najeeb Jung, AAP MLA Somnath Bharti has suggested that his constituency — covering Malviya Nagar, Safdarjung, Green Park and Hauz Khas — be turned into free WiFi zones.
Bharti asked that his MLA local area development (LAD) fund be used for it.
Explaining the reason for the plan, Bharti wrote, “As a majority of government schemes and information is available online, free wi-fi will let my people — many of whom are computer literate — easily access it. This plan will contribute to the future development of the city as one of the best in the world. This may be taken up as pilot project in Malviya Nagar,” Bharti wrote.
Stating that he had come up with the plan after visiting several countries, Bharti said, “Everything is internet-driven today. It has to be free as not everyone can afford it.”
While the final cost of the project is yet to be estimated, Bharti said according to preliminary research, the project will not be expensive.
He also spoke about further plans for his constituency. “We also want to set up computer centres in colonies where computer literacy is low. These centres will provide free training,” he said.
Supporting Bharti’s plan, the AAP, in a statement on Friday, said, “The party is of the view that MLA LAD funds should be utilised by MLAs in their respective constituencies as per the wishes of residents.”
