Govt will not tolerate hate crimes, spoke to PM Modi: Kiren

New Delhi: Days after the assault of three Nagaland youths in Gurgaon, Minister of State for Home, Kiren Rijiju, on Saturday said that India is a democratic nation and hate crimes will not be tolerated.

“Our society must exist harmoniously together and not be intolerant. We have decided to dedicate separate helpline and police force to deal with issues of students from North East region,” Rijiju said.

Rijiju visited Gurgaon today to take stock of situation and met senior police officials of the area.

A high-level meeting will be held on the issue which will discuss steps required to prevent such future instances.

“Have also spoken to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and National Security Advisor in this concern,” he added.

Rijiju further said that the central government has taken serious note of the matter and appropriate action will be taken.

He said that there is already a provision to prevent anti-racial attacks. “Will look into strengthening it further,” he said.

Rijiju's visit to Gurgaon today comes after locals assaulted three youths from Nagaland in Gurgaon's Sikanderpur village in a racially motivated attack.

The Nagaland youths were attacked by five people, who were in an inebriated state, after they allegedly refused to shared a drink with them and got into an argument.

The attackers also cut the hair of one of the youths.

Three of the five attackers have been arrested by the police.

After directions from Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Rijiju was scheduled to meet the family members of the victims and people from Northeast in Gurgaon.
