India coach Anil Kumble wants strong bench strength
When India’s home season begins, one which comprises 13 Tests and a couple of One-day International series, India coach Anil Kumble will also be keeping a close eye on fringe players. New Zealand, England, Bangladesh and Australia will tour during what will be a long home season and Kumble is keen that the pool of players knocking on the doors — apart from the established ones who will be in the national team — are also closely monitored in terms of performance and rehabilitation in case of an injury.
As part of his road-map, which was first discussed prior to the West Indies tour, during a conclave attended by Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, the national selectors, India A and junior team coach Rahul Dravid among others, Kumble asked the selectors to pick a probables team in all three formats and submit the names to him.
India’s highest Test wicket-taker is keen on being aware of all the players, both in the mix presently and on the fringes, that he will be in-charge of during his tenure, and it’s learnt that he will be monitoring their progress and performances with the assistance of former teammate Dravid, and veteran NCA coaches like Narendra Hirwani and WV Raman.
“The idea is that our bench strength should be ready if and when there is an SOS call. India will be playing New Zealand, England, Bangladesh and Australia. It is a long season ahead and Kumble wants to identify players and to see which format they fit into, if not all. While the top players pick themselves, horses for courses will be his mantra when it comes to shuffling players around. It’s the roadmap for India during his tenure, and he’s very keen on taking this team forward,” a source in the BCCI confirmed.
For the record, India have already climbed up the Test rankings under Kumble and had briefly taken over at the top before Pakistan replaced them, thanks mainly to the rained out draw in the fourth Test at Port-of-Spain.
It’s learnt that the BCCI has already given the go ahead to Kumble’s proposal and sources in the board have assured that Kumble will be kept in the loop about the performances of all those players waiting in the wings as well.
Kumble had also asked for the rehab schedules of the injured cricketers to be closely monitored, and his buzzword for the rest of his tenure is ‘better communication’ across the board.
“Kumble is sure that if the Indian team has to move forward, all stakeholders will have to work together. He can’t change things on his own. The Indian team has played good cricket at home but he wants to get different views on what is needed for them to do well overseas, like probably having more exposure trips for our bench strength,” the source added.
It’s just been a little over two months since he took over as India coach, but Anil Kumble has already made his presence felt. Whether it’s bringing in a new wave of discipline into the camp – issuing fines for errant players who miss the bus – bringing back John Wright’s buddy system or trying his best to get all the stakeholders on board and on the same page with regards to the road map for Indian cricket over the next busy 12 months.
