Delhi mulls diplomacy to arrest heavy gunfight at Indian Border
New Delhi : Govt likely to take up the issue with senior Pak govt functionaries.With no let off in firing incidents on the Western borders that have forced hundreds of people of several villages on both sides to flee to safer places, India is mulling over taking up the issue with Pakistan at the diplomatic level.There is a view within the government that cross-border firing between the BSF and Pakistan Rangers has basically escalated from unprovoked firing incidents, does not have any serious motives and can be stopped by bringing down the egos.
Senior officials said that the government was expecting a climb down after the DGMO (director general of military operations) level talks. If it doesn’t don’t yield any result, New Delhi may take up the issue with senior Pakistani government functionaries, sources said.BSF inspector general Ashok Kumar told dna that after a brief lull, when the BSF tried to hold a flag meeting with its Pakistan border counterpart, Pakistan Rangers, on Wednesday, firing resumed at night.
Kumar Mena, a head constable of BSF, was killed and 14 others, including a civilian, were injured on the Indian side in intense firing in which small-arms, 82-mm mortar shelling were used in the border areas of Jammu sector. Out of a total of 102 border posts in the Jammu region, 60 have come under heavy shelling in the past week.
Incidentally, the firing did not stop even during the recent visit of union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde forcing the government to look for a bigger initiative.Former director general of BSF, UK Bansal, during whose tenure there was relative peace at the international borders, told dna that though there is no standard procedure to deal with such situations, there should be a graded, proportionate and effective response by the BSF and local commanders in the thick of things should be allowed to handle and take their own initiative.
“Care should be taken not to enlarge the area of conflict but graded and effective response should be given back to the adversary. Even the proposal to hold flag meeting should be made only once.
These things generally clam down after a few days if there is not much media-generated jingoism and hype,” Bansal said.
