BJP may ask leaders to quit ‘unproductive posts’ in Punjab govt
Jalandhar : The Punjab BJP is considering a proposal to ask its leaders holding “unproductive posts” in the Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP coalition to submit their resignations to reduce the financial burden on the debt-ridden, cash-strapped government, it is learnt.
Politically, the idea is to put “moral pressure” on the SAD, whose leaders appear to hold most such posts, sources said.
Sources said that the suggestion came from the RSS after the government recently enforced austerity measures in view of the financial stringency in the state. It is being debated by senior party leaders, who will take the final call after consulting the central leadership.
The party believes the posts of parliamentary secretary and chairmen of boards and corporations are unproductive. Persons holding these posts get the status and facilities given to ministers, such as government houses, cars, salary, office, staff and other perks, but have lesser work.
Three of the 20 parliamentary secretaries in the SAD-BJP government are from the BJP, while the number of chairmen from the BJP is six.
Sources said the RSS told BJP leaders that by quitting their offices at such a time, they could set an example for others. “Such a step can put moral pressure on the SAD. If all those holding such posts resign, it will save crores every month,” said a BJP leader.
The parliamentary secretaries and chairmen were appointed to “accommodate” those leaders who could not be made ministers because of a law which states that the strength of the ministry should not exceed 15 per cent of the strength of the legislature.
In Punjab, which has a 117-member Assembly, the size of the ministry cannot exceed 18.
