Eye on Bihar, Shah attends Chhath

Ahmedabad : BJP national president Amit Shah on Wednesday attended Ahmedabad’s biggest Chhath puja, organised jointly by three organisations of north Indian communities, mainly from Bihar — which will go to polls next year.

After the ‘Maha Aarti’, which was attended by an estimated 15,000 people, Shah said, “I am from Ahmedabad, but as in-charge of purvanchal I got tremendous love from the local people. That is why the moment I got the invite, I accepted it.” He was referring to his successful stint as BJP’s Uttar Pradesh in-charge during the Lok Sabha elections.

Last year, the organisers of the Chhath puja — held in a part of the Sabarmati riverfront — had invited the then chief minister Narendra Modi as the chief guest of the event.

The puja was jointly organised by the Bihar Gujarat Maitri Sangathan (BIGMAS), Maa Jaanki Seva Samiti and Bihar Pradesh Seva Samiti, which have several IAS, IPS and IFS officers as members.

The organisers called it a “strictly religious and non-political function”, but the stage was occupied by several BJP MLAs and leaders from Ahmedabad. Among others who attended the event were Nirma group president Karsan Patel and Rajya Sabha MP from Jharkhand Parimal Nathwani.

Chief Minister Anandiben Patel, who is the MLA from Ghatlodia in Ahmedabad, was not invited to the event. Mahadev Jha of BIGMAS told The Indian Express, “We did not invite the Chief Minister. We invited Ahmedabad MLAs. Shah is MLA from Naranpura. And as Shah was already invited, we did not invite any other big leader to avoid inconvenience to devotees at the small venue.”

Ministers of State Pradeepsinh Jadeja (law and justice) and Shanker Chaudhary (health, roads and buildings), Naroda MLA Nirmala Wadhwani, Mayor Minaxi Patel and Ahmedabad West MP Kirit Solanki joined Shah on the occasion. Minister of state for Railways Manoj Sinha was also present.

BIGMAS is headed by Ahmedabad crime branch chief and IPS officer A K Sharma, who was considered to be close to Shah when he was a minister in Gujarat. At Wednesday’s event, the organisers played a clip of Modi’s speech last year.
