4 more, UP number swells to 12 as BJP eyes 2017 elections
Lucknow : By inducting four new faces from Uttar Pradesh in the Council of Ministers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who himself represents Varanasi in Lok Sabha, has started preparing for the 2017 Assembly elections, even as party leaders repeatedly predict early polls in the state.
The NDA government now has 12 ministers from UP, with induction of four new MPs as Ministers of State. The Central government already has four Cabinet ministers from UP, including Rajnath Singh, Uma Bharti, Kalraj Mishra and Maneka Gandhi. Former Goa CM Manohar Parrikar will be the fifth Cabinet minister from UP as he is going to be elected to Rajya Sabha from the state where he will file nomination papers on Monday.
The four new members included in the Union Council of Ministers from UP include Rajya Sabha MP Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Gautam Buddha Nagar MP Mahesh Sharma, Agra MP Ram Shankar Katheria and Fatehpur MP Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti.
Naqvi is a prominent Muslim face of the party and, according to party leaders, his induction in the government will help the BJP in convincing Muslims that the party is not against them. BJP national vice-president Naqvi has also served as the party spokesperson.
Party leaders said the induction of two-time MP from Agra (reserved) and party national general secretary Katheria was aimed to attract Dalit voters who are so far believed to be the vote bank of BSP. The BJP has been so far lacking a Dalit face in UP and it wants to go to the 2017 polls by projecting Katheria as a prominent Dalit leader of the party.
Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti is the only women MP who got a place in the government as minister in the expansion of Modi’s council of ministers. Jyoti belongs to Nishad (boatman) community and her induction could help the party attract backward caste voters in the 2017 Assembly polls. Jyoti is the second backward caste minister from UP, after Bareilly MP Santosh Gangwar who is Minister of State for Textiles.
Likewise, Mahesh Sharma is a medical practitioner with a clean image. Party leaders said Sharma’s induction is an indication that the party was preparing to focus on Brahmins in western UP.
Ghazipur MP Manoj Sinha, Muzaffarnagar MP Sanjeev Balyan and Ghaziabad MP V K Singh are other three Ministers of State from UP.
