Laxmikant Parsekar: A teacher who learnt from failure
Panaji : During his first attempt at contesting elections in the 1980s, Parsekar polled just a few hundred votes and lost his deposit. He debuted in the Goa legislative assembly in 2002 after beating local strongman Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party’s veteran leader Ramakant Khalap by a slender margin.
In 2012, when the BJP ousted the Congress government in Goa with an impressive show — winning 21 of the 40 seats — Parsekar was inducted into the Cabinet for the first time as the minister for health, panchayat raj and rural development.
Parsekar is the first chief minister from Mandrem constituency in north Goa since the state’s first CM Dayanand Bandodkar assumed office in 1963 after being elected from the same seat.
Parsekar was the headmaster at the Harmal Panchkroshi secondary school in his taluka, a position that is today held by his wife. His elder daughter is studying for BEd in Pune, while his son is pursuing a law degree from Miramar
in Goa.
The new CM is also a staunch supporter of the proposed international airport project in Mopa, in the northern-most tip of Goa. The project has been a bone of contention between voters in the north and south parliamentary constituencies, as those from the southern part feel that it will reduce the existing Dabolim airport in south Goa to the status of a domestic airport, in turn impacting the area’s tourism potential.
