Manohar Parrikar resigns as Goa CM, expected to join Modi Cabinet

New Delhi : After Manohar Parrikar faxed his resignation to State Governor Mridula Sinha at Raj Bhavan on Saturday afternoon.

And Parrikar’s two-paragraph resignation letter was faxed from his official residence at Altinho here. After resigning, Parrikar left the party headquarters to attend a meeting of office bearers and legislators who will finalise the name of his successor.

“The swearing-in of the new CM would be held at 4 PM,” Parrikar said before faxing his resignation. With the resignation of Parrikar, entire state cabinet comprising 12 ministers, two of which were from Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), was dissolved.

As Manohar Parrikar resigns to join the Union Cabinet, there are speculations as to who is in the line next.

Soon after he submitted his resignation letter, Manohar Parrikar took to Twitter to make the news public saying he would be taking up new role as assigned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He further thanked the people of Goa for their love and support that he got through out his tenure. The race for the post has intensified with Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza throwing his hat into the ring while Health Minister Laxmikant Parsekar has emerged as the front-runner to succeed Parrikar.

However, Francis D’Souza ahead of his crucial meeting with Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Saturday afternoon says, “I am still hopeful of being selected for the post. My name is still in the list. I am waiting for the decision from high command.”

D’Souza who arrived from London on Friday had claimed support of more than 12 legislators. “When I came back from abroad I was not knowing that my name is shortlisted. My outburst was due to the media reports,” added D’Souza.

While Health Minister Laxmikant Parsekar and Speaker Rajendra Arlekar are also being considered for the post by the BJP top brass, Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza has staked his claim to the chief ministership and said he would not work under either of the two leaders because they were junior to him. Several MLAs are in favour of him becoming the CM and have, reportedly, even threatened to resign if that doesn’t happen.

However, he said that he is a loyal worker of the party and would not go against its wishes.

Party General Secretary J P Nadda said here that the Parliamentary board discussed the political situation in Goa as well as the name of BJP nominee for a Rajya Sabha.
