Shiv Sena stakes claim for Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Assembly

New Delhi : The Shiv Sena on Monday staked the claim for leader of opposition in state assembly albeit with a caution that it was still ready for talks with BJP. The Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray said, “While we are firm on staking claim for opposition leader role, we are not denying the possibility for holding talks with BJP. We are always ready for the dialogue with BJP.”

The Shiv Sena’s flop flop in state assembly and outside some where signaled divide within the organisation with sizeable MLAs still urging party president Uddhav Thackeray not to resort to extreme stand against Devendra Fadnavis-led government in Maharashtra.

The elected MLAs may have displayed their saffron “phetas” turbans and occupied opposition benches in the morning to retain their identity
but the discomfort was clearly visible on their faces.

The Shiv Sena lead by Eknath Shinde submitted an official letter to the state legislature assembly secretariat claiming its right to leader of the opposition as it is second largest party with 63 MLAs.

In the house of 288 members, BJP with 121 MLAs (it won 122 seats and one MLA died) is the single largest party which is in government.

The Congress (42) and NCP ( 41) are in number three and four position seated as opposition parties.

Officially, Shiv Sena (MLC) Neelam Gorhe announced, “We have submitted the letter to stake claim the role of opposition leader in state assembly.”

The legislature secretariat also confirmed, “Shiv Sena with 63 MLAs has the right to role of opposition leader compared to Congress which has only 41 MLAs or NCP 42 MLAs.”
The BJP which has kept its plans ready to face the vote trust with the help of smaller groups and independents, held Sena’s wrong strategy
responsible for its political isolation that forced them to declare itself in opposition role.

Notwithstanding the Sena’s bravado to sit in opposition there was simmering discontent amongst its MLAs who argued, “It is strange that
being a second largest party with public mandate we are in opposition. We should have played our cards carefully to bring BJP to negotiating
tables for formation of government in Maharashtra.”

According to BJP senior leaders, “Officially, talks between Sena and BJP may have come to stand still. But back door negotiations are
underway. Everything will become clear on November 12.”

At the outset BJP held Sena responsible for taking an extreme stand by not allowing Anil Desai to join the union cabinet. Insiders revealed,
“All India BJP president Amit Shah had sought consent from Uddhav Thackeray to induct Anil Desai.” The Shiv Sena had insisted that they
would like at least two candidates induction in the union government.

Sources said, “The central leadership told them that since they have given only one minister post to alliance partner Telegu Desam Party.
