The Muslim face, ahead of Shahnawaz
New Delhi/lucknow : Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi (57) | MoS , Minority Affairs, Parliamentary affairs (Rajya Sabha)
A politician since his college days, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi is a familiar voice defending the BJP in the media. According to BJP sources, he has been chosen over Shahnawaz Hussain, the other prominent Muslim leader in the party, because he is closer to Modi. Besides, Naqvi is already a member of the Rajya Sabha.
The BJP’s national vice-president has been inducted at a time the party has fielded over a dozen Muslim candidates in Jammu and Kashmir. His induction appears to be aimed to sending out a message in J&K and UP, which will go to polls in 2017.
The BJP has used Naqvi as the voice of the party in expressing its stand on minorities. In 2005, he had said it is a serious concern that instead of excellence, some madrasas are producing extremists. Yet he also protested publicly against the leadership’s decision to induct former JD(U) leader Sabir Ali saying that Ali was a friend of Indian Mujahideen chief Yasin Bhatkal and went to the extent of saying Dawood Ibrahim could be the next entrant in the party.
He returns to the government 15 years after he served as MoS for information and broadcasting in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. Naqvi began his electoral politics in 1980 when he unsuccessfully contested for the Uttar Pradesh assembly on a Janata Party Secular (Raj Narain), and then as an independent.
