EC announces schedule for Delhi bypolls

New Delhi : The Election Commission of India on Saturday announced byelections for three Delhi constituencies vacated by candidates who were elected to the parliament after the general elections of 2014.

The three constituencies – Mehrauli, Tuglakabad and Krishna Nagar – will go to polls on November 25. Sitting MLAs from these constituencies Parvesh Sahib Singh, Ramesh Bishuri and Harsh Vardhan were elected to the Lok Sabha subsequently vacating these seats.

Although at present, the Delhi Assembly is in suspended animation, the commission has decided to fill these vacancies.

As per the Commission, the last date for filing nominations for the byelections is November 5 and the last date for withdrawal of candidacy is November 10. Counting will be held on December 23rd along with J&K and Jharkhand.

The Commission has decided to use EVMs in the byelections in all polling stations claiming that adequate numbers of EVMs have been made available and all steps have been taken to ensure that the polls are conducted smoothly with the help of these machines.

For the bypolls, voter’s Identification has been made mandatory and “Electoral Photo Identify Card (EPIC)” shall be the main document of identification for the voters.

The commission has stated that the Model Code of Conduct shall come into force with immediate effect “in the district(s) in which the whole or any part of the assembly constituency going for byelection is included,” and shall be applicable to all candidates, political parties and the state government concerned.
