On bomb search, police team attacked with bombs, bricks

Kolkata : Four policemen, including an officer in-charge (OC) sustained serious injuries when locals hurled bombs and attacked with sticks and bricks a police team which raided Chakmandalpur village in Birbhum district Friday on getting a tip off that bombs were being manufactured and stored there.

Prosenjit Dutta, OC of Parui police station, has been admitted to the ICU of Suri Hospital with splinter injuries. The police claimed the attack was led by a “local BJP leader”.

“Acting on a tip-off, a team of 12 constables led by OC Dutta had earlier in the day recovered more than 200 bombs from a primary health centre’s residential quarters at  Sattore village adjoining Chakmandalpur,” said Alok Rajoria, SP, Birbhum. A huge amount of raw material uses to manufacture bombs was also found.

“The team then raided a poultry farm in Chakmandalpur and recovered 14 containers of crude bombs. The number of bombs in each container is yet to be verified. As they proceeded towards another spot in the village, locals villagers ambushed the police vehicle,” Rajoria added.

It was found out that villagers had placed cart on the road stop the police vehicle (WB54 M 1984). “As we stopped, they started hurling bombs. At least six bombs hit the vehicle,” said Imdadul Haque, the driver of the police vehicle.

The OC was hit on the head by a brick fell down. “As I fell, they attacked me with sticks,” the OC said while being taken to Suri Sub Division Hospital. He also sustained splinter injuries. “They rained bricks and bombs on us,” he added.

While he refused to comment on the political affiliations of those who launched the attack, the police vehicle’s driver alleged that they belonged to the BJP. “They were BJP men who attacked us,” he claimed.

State Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Anuj Sharma, too, later blamed a local BJP leader for the attack. “Around 1 pm, some anti-socials led by a local BJP leader, hurled bombs on the police party,” he said, adding four persons have been arrested in this connection and raids were continuing to nab the remaining accused.

Meanwhile, BJP state president refuted the police claims saying the driver had bveen forced to give a statement under pressure from TMC. He instead, alleged that the TMC and foreign extremists might have been involved in the attack and demanded an immediate inquiry. “Going by the number of bombs recovered, I believe there could have been a Burdwan-like terror plan, in connivance with the TMC,” Sinha said.

Joining the issue, TMC Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal accused the BJP of being involved in the incident. “TMC workers who had defected to the BJP had done it. The BJP is trying to tarnish the image of the ruling party”.State Congress president Adhir Chowdhury on the other hand accused.
