MNS wants leader of opposition post in PMC
Pune : The MNS may be down and out with its poor performance in the state Assembly elections, but the city unit of MNS is not ready to give up as it has decided to get ‘aggressive’ to get the post of leader of opposition in Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) citing itself to be the main opposition party in the civic body.
In the 2012 civic elections of PMC, 51 NCP corporators got elected to the civic body while the MNS won 29 seats and Congress won 28, followed by BJP with 26 and Shiv Sena with 15. Two seats were won by RPI(A) and one by Independent. With MNS being the second largest party in the PMC, its leader Vasant More was given the leader of opposition post.
The disqualification of two MNS corporators for various reasons made the Congress the second largest party and then, More was replaced by Congress leader Arvind Shinde.
Ahead of the Assembly elections, Congress corporator Deepak Mankar had resigned from Congress to contest on NCP ticket from Kasbapeth Assembly seat. This has equaled the strength of Congress and MNS to 28 corporators.
“The MNS has 28 corporators in civic body and the leader of opposition post should be with us. I have raised the issue with the mayor for the purpose and the MNS will take up the issue agressively,” said More.
According to civic administration, the decision to appoint leader of opposition is with the mayor on the basis of strength of political parties. “The strength of both political parties might be equal but the Congress being a national party is likely to be favoured over MNS,” he said.
